A bit about Mine's, I…

From my teenage years onwards I’ve played in bands that had lead singers and lots of background vocals, which is a sound I've always liked. Having done that many times over since the late ’70s, I eventually reached a point where I wanted to try something different. As a guitarist & songwriter I needed more creative freedom. So, in 2008 I started down the instrumental path with the release of my debut solo album Worlds Within, and as it turns out, ended up staying on that path to this day.

For this album I played all of the instruments with the exception of the drums. For that task I enlisted my friend and drummer extraordinaire, Bill Mathews who played on six out of the nine tracks. In the past Bill & I tried putting some musical projects together on different occasions. However, life always seemed to have other plans during those times, so it just never worked out for us—until now! We had a lot of fun recording the drum parts, and as you’ll hear, his versatile playing was a perfect match for the different styles of songs.

I wrote the opening song Chimes along with many other songs I’d written during the early-mid ’90s. Fortunately for me, most of those songs ended up becoming the Wishbone Ash album Illuminations in 1996. Back then I thought Chimes (then unnamed) could also be a contender for Illuminations, but we had already reached the albums limit by that point. So the nameless song was shelved for several decades until I recently discovered it on one of my old cassette demo tapes. After hearing it again, I knew I had to redo it. Next step was to relearn all the guitar & bass parts, then record it (along with some added embellishments) and finally give it a name. Being able to bring new life into a tune written thirty years ago and have it fit in perfectly with what I'm doing now, turned out to be a real gift. As with Chimes the Wishbone-style guitar harmonies can also be heard on several other songs on Mine’s, I.
